So, after much frustration with my broadcom card i bought a Netgear WPN511 wireless card. I plugged it in, followed the 3 step process on the ath driver site and it worked immediately (it even worked with WPA2 [AES]!). I appreciate all the help and the suggestions on wireless cards.
