Sun is actively working on the hotkey support - we're working with many 
laptop vendors to get their specs and implement various vendor-specific 
hotkey support. Sony is on our list. We expect better hotkey support in 
the upcoming builds. See below for the workaround.

You can right click the volume icon on the task bar and adjust the volume

Right click on the task bar, click "Add to Panel," select "Brightness 
Applet," and press "+Add" button. If you didn't get a red circle with 
cross-bar, then you can adjust brightness via this applet, otherwise, 
it's not supported yet - sorry.
