Again, these two examples are exactly the same -- the same XML cut and pasted! One draws from an external XML file, the other from an embedded dataset. They should not be operating differentlybased on location of XML, even is some tweak of whitespace preservation gets the external xml to work.
I will run the example with different text to see if that has any impact.

If so, this looks like a whitespace preservation issue. There's global
control for that somewhere, I believe.
