Agreed. If you don't save from Word, the file will most probably not 
be changed. (But what do you mean by "word version is read only"?)

Anyway, as one of the developers uses a Mac himself, the latex2rtf 
output should be compatible with Word for Mac.
To give any more help, we need to know which version of latex2rtf you 
installed.
