It's not that it stops. You can still make an application that works with both.

However if you make an app that depends on those details it won't
work. Actually, even then it should be possible to make it work with
some ifdefs.

Lazarus was never perfectly compatible with Delphi anyway, starting
that we already support unicode on gtk2 since years and that obviously
doesn't work on delphi.

That's correct. There will be now a significant cost for components to
maintain multiple versions of Delphi, but it's still possible with
ifdefs.
