imho, this is not the reason because many new users don't use Lazarus. I believe first one is that they don't trust in opensource software, which instead is a winner choice, always imho, but a bit painful to begin. Just a quick google search and you can see as you said that you can stripping it and upx it, so size it is not a great issue.
