I still didn't get this quite right. The Spot Measurement tool is doing either of two things: 1. If it is displaying to a D50 monitor, the intent which it is using makes no difference. 2. If it is displaying to a D65 monitor, it would be using relative intent. (certainly, a relative conversion of the Lab values in Photoshop to my D65 monitor space results in a very similar colour to that which is being displayed in the S.M tool)
I continue to be amazed at how colourful "white" can appear.
