Hi Xavier,I'd like to build a profile for my printer, but I don't know much about color management, and I therefore have a few questions regarding targets, printer profiles and lcms:
- Can lcms be used to build printer profiles? Is there already an available tool somewhere?
no, the LCMS profiler does not support printer profiling. There are of course several commercial software products available. If you're looking for a _free_ profiler which also creates printer profiles, then then I know only a single one: http://web.access.net.au/argyll
The procedure is rather a bit different, but yes, there do exist scanner-based profiling solutions to generate printer profiles, even commercial ones. So basically, it is possible. However, scanner-based printer-profiling solution usually suffer from scanner metamerism and therefore often do not work very well (i.e. the do not result in as accurate colors as desired). The error cannot be generalized, but depends on the combination of the printer model, the used inks and paper, and the used scanner model.- Is it the case that if one prints a scanned target then, assuming the scanner is perfectly profiled, one can build a printer profile? Is this something that actually works, or is it just good from a theoretical point of view?
For printer calibration, usually not an IT8 scanner target is used, but different targets. For a very good printer profile, you may need a target with >= 1000 (up to a few thousands) patches, particularly for CMYK profiles, due to the additional degree of freedom.- Wouldn't it be better to print the (perfect) image file from which the target was generated, rather than the scanned target, to avoid one set of scanning errors? Are such files usually available? Is it possible to create such a file, if given the IT8 reference file of the target?
Best Regards, Gerhard
