Well, I use it as an internal format for image
processing and compositing. In my experience, it
offers more predictable results for users. I also work
with a lot of cg imagery, which is all rendered in a
linear space.
For instance, if you had a function that generated a
linear 8 bit ramp, from pure black (0) to white (255),
what kind of profile would you use to characterize it?
