Clipping is something that really bothers me, too. That's why I
rewrote a lot of code in (my own version of) dcraw to get around it.
This is a drawback of using matrix/shaper type profiles, and not
using any real gamut mapping or gamut clipping. Gamut mapping and Lut
based profiles have their own set of drawbacks.
Of course it's possible to create various clipping rules to map
an out of gamut value back to the device range. The usual choices
are available (keep constant hue ? de-saturate ? etc.) All depends on
how much trouble you want to go to.
