There are actually two subtly different things you can do in this area. One maintains colorimetric accuracy, while preserving the black generation characteristic, while the other maintains colorant purity at the cost of colorimetric accuracy. Each technique suites a different purpose. A common "hack" aimed at addressing black text issues, converts 000K into 000K (maybe with a transfer curve correction), or even R=G=B into 000K. Such hacks prove to be very effective in an office color type environment.
