I'm running bash (and vim) on my development systems here, and I have not
seen this problem.  Can you provide more details about your system:

Hardware details (cpu, memory, NIC's, etc)
Configuration (packages & modules loaded from CD)
Which packages you have local configuration information for on your floppy.

I'm not sure what the problem could be...
