I think you are confusing small applications with distributions. Look at 
the
page for /public/ftp/pub/Linux/apps/appliance:
http://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/apps/appliance/!INDEX.html.;
Each entry consists of tarball, LSM, date and a short description.

On the other hand, I think you will notice that Gentoo and the other
distributions do not follow those naming conventions.
