I was more trying to find out if there were room for *anything* besides the
main LEAF distro at this point...

Since you mentioned it... and since there have been discussion about booting
off something else than floppy, here are a few things that has happened on
Alpine since that post:

* optional boot from floppy support (if your bios doesn't boot cd's or usb
drive)
* boot from usb drive (or boot from floppy and read packages from usb drive)
* moved from initrd to initramfs
* apk-tool supports remote package repositories over http/ftp/scp/rsync in
addition to any mountable media specified in fstab
* updating packages works (but merging conf's is still missing)
* a few kernel generations. (2.6.14 is the current one)
* moved to http://jv.lmdata.org/alpine/hardened/isoimages
* backup config files to floppy or usbdrive. (you can run from cd and store all
your local configs on usb)
* usb hotplugging.

The hardware detection works pretty well. It finds most of the hardware on
newer dell computers I have tested it on, including wifi.

The iso includes floppy images for running of cdrom or running from usb drive.
(i think its just to copy over the contents to a vfat formatted usbdrive and
boot the usb floppy image)

To try latest (published) iso:
