The answer was archived at the hostap site, which is that hostap requires firmware revision 1.4.9 on Prism II cards, and Linksys haven't got there yet (although someone has "hexed" another Prism II firmware updater to accept the relevant id's). WISP now works fine, and I'm very impressed, although now I start the LRP stuff in detail as I need to enhance it, and customise it, where a good introductory book would be very handy.
