Basically, Chris, when Scott and I (and others, but not on this list) were
originally developing what became echowall.lrp, we were looking for a
firewalling setup that would work with systems that assigned IP addresses to
the LAN dynamically. Hence the use of MAC addresses (not really permanent,
but much more so than IP addresses), gatping, and other stuff that went by
the wayside.
