You could boot from a 1440 floppy and run from CD-Rom...I do that a lot when
I'm testing (easier/faster to edit the floppy than burn a new CD!).

If it worked better previously, this could be a problem with syslinux 1.62,
or your BIOS, or some wierd interaction between the two.  You might try
using the syslinux version that worked well previously.
