Maybe...the busybox hostname didn't support the -f switch for getting the FQDN. I've since fixed this (and many other problems with hostname), and sent a patch to the Busybox list. If you set MAIL_DOMAIN, you would not see the error, becuase you wouldn't be executing the hostname -f command...
