I cannot be certain based on what you reported, but my first guess is that
you are using the wrong module(s) for your NICs. The other problems you
report are all likely to be secondary consequences of this failure.
Since I don't recall the particular NIC you are using, my first question
back to you is what your basis is for saying "they *should* [my emphasis] be
compatible with the ne2k-pci driver".
A more practical question: if you try to install the modules by hand, after
you boot the system and log in as root, what result is reported?
Specifically, I mean these commands, executed in order:
insmod 8390.o [BTW, note that it ends in .o, NOT .0]
insmod ne2k-pci.o
If these modules -- the second one, in particular -- report any errors, then
they are not finding your NIC(s). Either something is wrong with the
hardware (the NICs or the mobo), or -- more likely -- the NICs use a
different module from the one you think they do. Likely candidates ... only
because a lot of different NICs use them ... are tulip.o and rtl8139.o .
