charles, ray, thanks for your responses. i tried the dd method with 
little success until finding a message from the linuxrouter meilaing 
list in google's cache about the correct handling of dd in older 
busyboxes (dd < /dev/fdsomething > /tmp/somefile). hooray for google! :-)

the backup/copying of remote individual lrp's from /tmp will work well 
for subsequent experimentation. thanks for the tip.
