Thanks to all the helpful people on the list. I have a working Dachstein firewall.

I'll try to write up the full experience so that other users of this cable company can
benefit.
(NTLWorld in the UK.)

Essentially the cable company was keeping track of the network card MAC address and
this was why

a) my firewall appeared to be given a 10. address - it was meant to be temporary
and
b) why I was getting persistant poackets from something afterwards it was a special
server trying
to set up the IP address properly.

Also the DHCP server in the set top box only works for a few minutes after being
powered up which
was fun. This meant I had to synchronise power cycling the set top box with half way
through the
Dachstein boot up sequence :-)

Anyway since the first network card I used was a PCMCIA in a laptop I couldn't use it
in my
firewall. I eventually took out the external NIC, put it in a windows box, and tried
that. The
cable company hardware recognised that I had changed my MAC address and sent my
browser to a page
which had a simple registration form. I then registered that PC (ie MAC address) with
the cable
company. It then set up my machine with a new config which wasn't in the 10. range.
(Although
winipcfg works on Win98 I had to use ipconfig and nslookup on my NT box)
I now have a fixed IP address for that MAC address, a gateway address, and a DNS
server. Hooray.

I transfer the NIC back into the Dachstein firewall, configure it to NOT use DHCP, but
use static
external IP instead, and bobs your uncle. I can ping the dns server and www.yahoo.com
and it all
works lovely.

I just push my local boxes into the 192.168.1.200-253 range and they all work fine.

Thanks Again

I might have been able to manage this on the Dachstein box if there was a lrp lynx web
browser.
Does such a beast exist?
