I cannot accurately say how I got rid of the low memory error. I had tried different kernal combinations with various results ranging from the low memory error to just plain 'boot fail'.
However, I am going to save my system and retry from the start (making notes). Assuming I get a repeat success, I will write a text on the steps. One thing to try, however, is to make a working boot floppy that allows you to mount the DOC. I found this helpful in knowing the MAJOR device number that it found the DOC on. I had read several texts that mentioned various numbers. Since I do not have a full working Linux system, I had to use the DOS 'rdev' function and it only takes numeric parameters. Standby in the next couple of days and I will provide the text and a legal distribution of my working system. It does NOT all fit on one 1,680K floppy, I use too many modules. It will be provided in a ZIP file. I'm currently spending most of my weekend attempting to get it working and like charles mentioned, I'm running into a 'insufficent low memory error'. How did you get around that? When I attempted to syslinux the DOC using 1.66 it whined about exclusive access. Perhaps you can do a small write up on the steps you took to complete it?
