The "small" kernel on the Dachstein floppy does not have built-in serial support, but the "normal" and "RAID" kernels do. You can either use one of the "normal" series Dachstein kernels, or compile your own, if you really want (if you do, you'll save a bit of space, assuming you don't need the advanced routing features of the normal kernel).
