I recall having trouble running one version of syslinux against my hard 
drive. I went to the source and got a different version of syslinux and 
it worked ok. (http://syslinux.zytor.com) I don't recall which version 
worked for me, and it would probably depend on your hard drive, but I 
think running it from linux worked better for me than from dos.
