The fact that your router cannot ping a machine on an adjacent subnet
seems to be an obvious place to investigate.  However, telling us that
"ip route lists both subnets as I would expect them to be" doesn't leave
us much to go on.  Perhaps you should read
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=1300&page_id=9 under
the section on routing problems, and report back in more detail.
