Thanks Kim:

I am currently running smoothwall with a Intel etherexpress16 and smz ez100
and the loaded modules are eexpress and rtl8139, I took out the Intel
pro100 (pci, which I would like to use) and put back in the Intel
etherexress16 (isa) because I did not want to go without a firewall for
too long. I did not get a chance to ping yet with the current setup, but at
the time I had the other setup (with the Intel pro100), I tried ping and did
not get a response from either nic. Strangely the smz nic works with the
rtl8139 in smoothwall but the smc website supplies a tulip (tulip.H whatever
that means).

Are there any other Linux commands I can run besides ping?

Does the leaf project have modules for supplying compiling tools?
