Quite a challenge ! But worth trying it...

Jeff:
This is an interesting issue...
Let's try to sort that out.

There are two drivers available for the speedtouch modem.
All the details are here:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/speedtouchusb.html
Basically there is the driver you mention in {2] and which requires kernel
patching but supports apparently both PPPoE and PPPoA
and there is B Papillaud driver which does not require kernel patching but
which supports originally only PPPoA. This is the one I compiled for LEAF
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net

Very recently an hack was proposed to include PPPoE to Papillaud driver:
http://www.prout.be/ECI/speedtouch.html

So I have updated my speedtch.lrp package to upgrade it to 1.1 (used to be
1.1-rc2)
and added a speedtch-pppoe.lrp (to be renamed speedtch.lrp) with the above
mentionned patch. Check:
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/bering/latest/contrib/drivers/speedtouch-usb/
You could give it a try and let us know ??

Caveats
The /etc/init.d/speetouch script needs to be fixed
The Bering kernel must be recompiled to be able to mount usbdevfs (see my
mail to the list August, 23)
You will need to package rp-pppoe
Good luck !
Jacques
