A bit more information on this technique... Many cable modems use the LAN address 192.168.100.1 . In addition to SNMP, many also have web-based interfaces that listen on that address. My last cable modem was a Motorola "shark fin" style modem that could be reset from the LAN via the web interface or SNMP. The SNMP community strings were default values that I found searching mailing list postings and web forums via google. My current cable modem is an RCA/Thomson that supports SNMP, but uses non-default community strings making it very difficult to query or reset via SNMP commands. Searches for your cable modem model, "DOCSIS", and "SNMP" in various combinations on google should turn up tons of information.
