If you use Bering why not use pppd demand dialing? I use pppd for demand
dialing. Have you looked at the Bering user guide? The serial modem
chapter might help.
"pon" may work just going from memory so may be wrong.

Just in case you are wondering I have setup khaddley's version of
Dachstein-1.02. I prefer Bering better firewalling (uses iptables instead
of ipchains) shorewall is good and Tom is on leaf user and devloper email
lists in addition to his shorewall help list (other distrubutions can run
shorewall (Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse, etc.) ).
