Hello,

I've recently had to do some unintended compatability testing for
Dachstein and I thought I'd document it here for the record:

1. Intel Pro 100S desktop adapter (i82550, with IPSec capability)

This, as far as I know, does not work any of the ee*.o drivers timestamped
Dec-1-2001 listed in

http://lrp.steinkuehler.net/files/kernels/Dachstein-small/modules/

I also believe it is not RedHat Linux compatible to at least v 7.3.

I made the mistake of telling someone to order a pair of Intel Pro 100's
... they ordered the Pro 100S model and I couldn't get any modules to even
load with the Intel Pro 100S cards. Worse still, some modules, (I'm not
sure which ones again) caused the machine to lock up during the boot
process.

2. D-link DFE-530TXS (*Not* via-rhine like DFE-530TX, but sundance ... but
*not* the same as DFE-550TX)

The D-Link DFE-530TX (NOT THE D_Link DFE-530TX_S_) uses the via-rhine.o
module. The D-link DFE-530TXS will not work with the via-rhine.o module.
RedHat Linux 7.x will detect this card as a "Sundance" card
(Dec-1-2001 sundance.o module for the D-link DFE-550TX).

The cards are configurable and load properly with sundance.o, BUT I found
that they crashed connections on the DFE-530TXS under very light loads of
network traffic. I would not recommend using these cards with the
Dachstein sundance.o module timestamped Dec-1-2001.

3. 3Com 905CX-TX-M (again, *not* 3Com 905C)

This card will not work with the 3c59x.o modules of Dachstein. The
module loads, and configures the NIC interfaces, but then does not
function. The module that *will* work is 3Com's own 3c90x.o module. I
downloaded it from the c0wz mirror on sourceforge.net

http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/thc/files/modules/3c90x.o

If you do feel like compiling it from source for a 2.2.x kernel (I think
it is RedHat 6.1 tested), you can obtain it from 3Com's website.

I think someone else has already asked why 3c90x.o is not available from
the Dachstein distro website. If it is not an oversight, is it to do with
3Com?

Hope people find this useful.

                                Regards,

                                Duncan.
