I got it working by simply installing Debian 2.1 "Slink", which has the 2.0.7
glibc version and copy talk/talkd, libncurses4 and terminfo stuff.

However I still don't understand why the statically compiled version didn't
run: the nsswitch.conf was identical to that on my debian system and I suppose
that when I link statically, that's against all libs including libnss_dns.

Anyways, it works and thanks for the help Lynn and Brad.
