yes, sorry for the confusion... basically i would like to see the amount of time spend on the internet per ip address, heretoforth referred to as "user". i realize that total time is perhaps not the most precise definition since it is indicative/related to the amount of bandwidth you have, but i hope that i have cleared that confusion up now. i would like to see the user(s) http connection requests with a time stamp i suppose, would that be the best way of monitoring internet usage? i could then get at least a rough estimate of time spent on the internet.
Well, I can't say if it is the "best way of monitoring internet usage", because "usage" is even worse defined than "time" in this context.
It would be easier to give you real advice if I understood something of your purpose. For example, are you trying to set up an automated system to see how muich time your kids spend surfing over your DSL connection? Or are you trying to figure out which users place the most peak-hours load on your company's bandwidth? Or something else?
If you just want to log http (and, probably, https) requests, there are two relatively straightforward ways to do it.
One, force users to go through a proxy server for http (and https), and set it to log all requests. I think Squid will do this (though it has been some time since I last used Squid).
Two, add an iptables rule to your router that causes it to log all destination-port-80 (and destination-port-443) traffic. This is not perfect -- some URLs use different ports -- but it will get most Web traffic.
[old stuff deleted]thanks matt
