Hi Robert,
I suspect that the error is indeed in the WinXP config file. Make sure that you have the full DN name of the CA certificate in the config file including the e-mail address.
In the output of "ipsec auto --status" there is a line that starts with "CAs:"
This line describes exactly what FreeSWAN on the Bering-uClibc box is expecting as DN.
