Wayne, I had the same problem, can you check the auth.log file in /var/log ? Mine had a message like 'unable to identify client version', does you logfile contain a similar message?
Could it be that something is wrong with the dropbear.lrp package, or is the standard configuration of most ssh-clients (I tried SecureCRT on Windows and the standard ssh-client that comes with Red Hat Linux) not right for connecting to dropbear? I switched to the sshd.lrp package, which works fine here.
