I don't know how to get UPS communications working in linux or on
Bering, but it occured to me that there might be an easier way...

If your bering machine is booting off some kind of read-only media
(cdrom or a write-protected floppy, for example) then there is no reason
to do a clean shutdown.  You can just let the UPS die.  I don't know
what your setup is like or if it is possible for you to use read-only
media.  If it is, that might be a better way to go.
