Please forgive my questioning the way you have done things Charles: but to me it seems a little 'inverted' to have the package-list 'read' from right-to-left (where the default=:f[orward]). For we English-readers 'forward' would normally connote left-to-right, non?

As you said (snipped for clarity):

( loaded last) is *FIRST* and ... (loaded first) is listed last.

However please have no doubt how thankful I am for this partial-backup functionality though! It's tres cool :)

English is my first language (here in the middle of the US). There are arguements for parsing the list both ways (left-to-right and right-to-left). I ultimately decided PKGPATH is a prioritized list of package locations, and therefore it makes sense (to me, at least) to have the hightest priority (ie: last package loading location) listed first.

NOTE: Multiple package path entries is a little-used (especially prior to the deprication of the boot= entry in the kernel command line)

Is there some other way to effect the cd-rom + (partial-backup) floppy setup or is it that simply very few people go this route?

It's due to the fact that in Dachstein (and earlier Bering releases) you would have the boot= device set to the floppy, and the PKGPATH= device set to the CD-ROM...no need for multiple PKGPATH devices, so no worries about search order. With the new init scripts there's no more boot= device, so PKGPATH contains two devices and the search order is now important.
