Hi

I've recently set up a couple of Bering boxes using CF as boot media. It
works, boot is fast etc... but... I'm not particularly fond of the fact that
there's no HW write-protect option for CF.

I suggested a kind of write protection for IDE devices some time ago. It consists of a little script in /etc/init.d/ which runs right before login and removes all ide support from the kernel. You can apply this to a system which does not need much modification anymore, allows just access using ssh and rsa authentication. In case you need to write to the CF you will need to reinstall ide support by copying the necessary modules to memory and insmodding them. You might even remove the insmod command and require to install that too. It is not HW write protection, but needs some stubborness ti write to the CF without the necessary information.
