If you remove the media or reboot before doing a sync or umount, data can get corrupt. The lrcfg script umounts after a backup, but ofcourse doesn't know about mounts made by the user.
And especially, it you have mounted your CF somewhere in your file system tree and back up root.lrp without caring, you are bound for a screwdriver session to take the CF from your motherboard and reload an original image, because one thing is for sure, this system is not going to boot anymore :-(
