Oh crap!

I missed the part where you said you're booting from a floppydrive and 
only use the cdrom to store packages.

I used a similar setup several years ago on the old LRP 1.x release and 
got similar results every time I used oversized floppy formats. Never 
managed to get this running either - the system boots en then stalls for 
no apparent reason. Once I switched to a regular 1.44 formatted disk I 
had no problems at all, but back then the kernel was about half the size 
of the current Bering kernel.
