I was able to get more information concerning this topic from the hostapd-list. There are actually two things to know: 1. channel_policy is not a valid configuration option for the open source hostapd. 2. Please also note that madwifi does not actually use the channel configuration from hostapd (unlike some other drivers). In other words, if you want to change the channel, you will need to do this with iwconfig. After all, I 'found' the wireless.lrp which contains iwconfig. Having this installed, the wireless-channel statement was set after reboot and I now have channel 8 active. Rereading the howto showed me, that I messed installing this package allthough it was written to be done - my fault. Thanks again.
