I was reading through the install guide in the section on networking and
came upon this section on the sysctl.conf file.

These are default variables generally acceptable. The ip_forward variable is
set back to true by Shorewall - so if you do not use Shorewall and want to
enable ip forwarding you will have to uncomment this variable.

Apparently it never hurts to read the manual again before asking for help
