Just tested this myself. Looks like the 2.6 ext2.ko depends on
kernel/fs/mbcache.ko

In case you're not doing it already, it's best to specify the filesystem
type (ext2) as part of the device specification - in other words
something like:
  /dev/sda3:ext2

There are defaults which get used if you omit that, but ext2 isn't one
of them :-)
