Of course it was an insult, but not necessarily a RACIST insult. If I called someone, who was black, a 'twat' (or something more colourful - no pun intended), does that make me racist?
If I called someone a 'black twat', does that make me racist? I do think we need to be a bit more intelligent when accusing people of being racist based on verbal insults - surely racism is insulting someone BECAUSE they are black, not simply using their colour/race/creed as a differentiator. Just like calling someone a fat/ginger/whingeing/crap/bow legged/goofy/French/lanky/short/smelly/thick - twat. Wanker that he is, I do also sort of see the point Blatter was making about insults being forgotten at the end of a match - I always got involved in "banter" when I played, and it often got anglo saxon. It was part of the game, and half the time the point was to wind the other player up so much that they got distracted... much better than off the ball punching and all that crap I never went in for. Most of the time you would have a chat and laugh about it in the bar after the match. Oh, and I never had to resort to colour/race/creed, I was far more creative than that. Yes professional players need to be more careful, and shouldnt use race as a differentiator as their actions are viewed out of context, but I dont necessarily think Terry is a racist just because he might have called Anton Ferdinand a 'black cad'. Thick yes, racist no. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Lee Sent: 23 December 2011 14:00 To: Michael Walsh; 'Tim Leslie'; [email protected] Subject: Re: [LU] Non LU - Suarez / Terry Hi Michael Agree entirely with your comments. Suarez, imho, didn't use the word negrito in any sort of positive way, and I'd be really interested to hear him describe any context in which that kind of comment isn't meant to be an insult? _______________________________________________ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email [email protected] PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate
