With the benefit of local knowledge I give you the perfect candidate....Crewe manager Steve Davis. (Not the snooker player!) Took over from Dario Gradi in the autumn with Crewe facing a battle to stay in the League. But once he was in charge a long unbeaten run carried them up the League Two table to a seventh place finish, and in the play-off semi an aggregate win over Southend secured a place at Wembley on Sunday. Prior to that he had a very successful spell in charge of non-league Nantwich Town. And all of this working on a tight budget, so he would appeal to Bates! Tim W.
