I think we have a few world class players, Collingwood and Pieterson to name
2, the problem has been up the order, but has been for a while now.

And our bowling is rubbish, normally perm 1 from 5 to have a decent game,
others are so so.

But anyhow, problem with Boycott was, as I have said, his run rate. As you
say he was capable of 'getting a lash on' but either due to his then
animosity towards ODIs or not wanting to sacrifice his wicket, he rarely
did. In those days it was acceptable to have a slow & steady start and then
accelerate later on. He often didn't accelerate.

His style/mentality/approach was ideal for test cricket, but not
particularly ODIs. Which was the point I was trying to make to Rich.

I don't think Gerrard & co would have a chance in hell of winning a beach
footy competition against teams who specialise in that game. Rich's
argument was that if you can play football, you can play any kind of
football, and that is rubbish!

Is there not a subtle point to be made here about cricket - regardless of
whether it's 5 day test or 1 day slogfest, Ingerland currently have poor
players for all options. I don't think we should be limiting discussion to
one crap XI, we've got several crap XIs potentially!

I never really accepted that Boycott was a poor one-dayer - mostly he seemed
to use one day games as practice, rather than as things to be won! When he
did get a lash on he was outstanding, although I'm sure there's plenty of
anecdotal examples to demonstrate that he didn't do that often enough. I'll
readily accept that my memory of Great Boycott Innings is on the wane after
30+ years :-)

I bet they wouldn't. You clearly don't know the game. Most test players
are nowhere near fit or quick (and big) enough for test 7's.
