Whilst I broadly wish to agree with your stance I really do think that you are attempting to equate non religeous acts elsewhere with acts undertaken in the name of Islam as a religeon. The wearing of Donkey hats was not done in the name of Christianity. Even if it had have been, nobody died and no limbs were severed as a result. The Koranic punishments handed out by Sharia courts ARE acts done in the name of Islam. There is no point in pretending otherwise. People and governments in the places that these things take place do not pretend otherwise so why should anybody else pretend otherwise ? > Have you ever heard of the lords resistance army or the Jonestown, Guyana > "suicides"? My understanding is that this insanity was internalised to that particular cult. They did not perpetrate their views on outsiders. That is not to defend any of what took place but it was not a howling mob gleefully stoning a victim to death. It was not a crowd gathered in the marketplace on their day off to watch the sentence of a Sharia court take place as a mobile crane hoisted somebody high over the crowd dangling by the neck. It was not the Riad market with the flash of a sword as a head was severed in public. >the later not dreadfully recent, but I'm sure a depressing hour > on google would drag up more recent examples. If you can find them then please share them. There may be individual acts of insanity but not the institutionalised acts of Islam. I have not the slightest doubt that many millions of Muslims share the abject horror of these events but if Muslims will not put their own house in order then outsiders do not have to stand by and allow these things to continue. Islam was once the enlightenment. It was a shining path. Where is that promise now as it it is bogged down in the thinking of the middle ages ? > All religions and belief systems (marxism etc) are used by individuals and > groups to justify or defend terrible things As major religions go, Islam > is > not unique in this. I haven't read the koran, but the muslims I haved > lived > and worked with do not believe that it directs them to do any of the > terrible things that have been done in it's name. Fine as far as it goes but unless those Muslims of which you speak are prepared to do what it is going to take to put their own house in order then fairly obviously somebody else from the outside of Islam is going to have to do just that. There will be no justification for wringing their hands and wailing and even less justification for joining with their Muslim brothers who they apparantly never agreed with in the first place. _______________________________________________ the Leeds List is an unmoderated mailing list and the list administrators accept no liability for the personal views and opinions of contributors.
