Leeds players to be paid this week, say PFA

After days of delicate negotiations the players of Leeds United seem poised to
be paid for the first time in seven weeks, by tomorrow at the latest. "I would
hope payment of the Leeds players will take place in the next 24-48 hours,"
said Mick McGuire, deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers'
Association.
Yet while Dennis Wise's squad will doubtless be relieved to finally receive
salary cheques for June, their satisfaction may be tempered by fears that their
July remuneration might arrive similarly late.

It is understood that the July payments are due to be made at the start of next
week but with the Football League still withholding Leeds's "golden share" -
effectively membership rights in the competition - there have to be doubts as
to whether that pay run will take place on time. Without the share Leeds have,
so far, been unable to access more than £2m accrued through the sales of David
Healy, Robbie Blake and Kevin Nicholls.
The league harbours serious concerns about the resale of Leeds to Ken Bates by
the administrators, KPMG, without a Company Voluntary Agreement and are taking
their time to decide if they will return the "golden share" to the re-formed
club.

Frustrated supporters yesterday launched a "Love Leeds, Hate Bates", website,
aimed at ousting the controversial chairman, but the club called for unity. "It
is important that we receive everybody's support behind getting the share
back," wrote Shaun Harvey, a Leeds director, in a statement. "This is time to
unite not divide. We are in daily contact with the league and are now pushing
them to schedule a date for the board meeting [to determine what to do with the
'golden share']."

The administrator has been criticised for opting to sell Leeds to Bates ahead
of other interested parties but KPMG is about to explain its actions. "We will
be sending a letter out to creditors on Friday explaining the reasons behind
our decision," said a source. "We hope it will help creditors understand the
situation more clearly."
