Brilliant stuff Tim - nothing I can argue with there - I am almost
exactly the same as yourself on this, insofar as I too always supported
the "local" team - and even, to a certain extent, did on Saturday - I
too am seriously pissed off with being seen as either a racist or
(almost worse) a chav low life who wants to display the flag of St
George, my country. OK I may not have one of those flag holders on my
car - I am too mean with the petrol consumption for that - but I like to
display a flag in one of our upstairs windows (not hanging out of it) at
times such as St Georges day or a major game day, but feel almost
intimidated to do so these days.

Well said Tim

Steve

Well it's interesting you say this Rich. For as long as I can remember
I've always backed a home nation in a game, despite their almost 'Carry
on' version of hatred for us. Years of 'Anyone but England' when
interviewed on the TV have simply been shrugged off with a wry smile ...
But I'm finding it increasingly difficult to do this these days. Being a
Scot and proud of it makes you, in the eyes of the world, a fiercely
loyal, good humoured, proud person who is perfectly in their right to
paint the cross of St Andrew on your face and sing Flower of Scotland
with
your arms round some unfortunate local. Be English and in the same
situation and we're being manufactured into Yobs, Racist thugs and
Nationalistic in the very wrong sense. I am none of these and object
strongly to this stereotyping of an English sports fan. The key moment
for
me was when that miserable little over hyped wanker Andy Murray came out
with the 'Anybody but England' statement at the last world cup ... and I
thought "Well fuck you then you little shite, and anyone else from your
3rd world country who feels the same", without the support of the
English
his earning potential would be less than half what it is now ... And
I've
got a very strong Scottish history. Decades of prodding by them has
finally taken it's toll and, much as I would have loved for them to beat
the Italians deep down, when I found the result out on Saturday an
increasingly bigger part of me thought "Good. It serves them right".
