Having seen us pick up only one point in our last two visits to Gresty Road
then any sort of victory would have done me beforehand. In the event I think,
in many ways, it was the best football we have played all season - I accept
what John Lee says about the quality or lack of it in this Division, don't
forget John it is the THIRD DIVISION !! - with some slick pass and move
football. In the space of two games and the introduction of Kilkenny (and Flo)
we have totally changed the way we play the game. If this had been 3 weeks ago
Crewe and their passing game would have shredded our midfield and we would have
been depending on last ditch passionate defending coupled with long hopeful
balls to Kandol and Beckford - tactics which may well have proved effective and
got us 3 points but led to their fans etc claiming they deserved to win (sound
familiar ?) but not last night , we pretty much passed them off the park.
Kilkenny and Sweeney were outstanding, keeping the ball,
providing balance and making it hard for the opposition. Hughesy was
everywhere ,a third Divison Batty , tackling , intercepting and playing mainly
simple balls to the more talented footballers. It was a pleasure to watch.
As for the other new lad, Kenton, I can honestly say I never once thought or
said "if only Rui were playing " and there is not much higher praise than that.
Add to the mix the fact that Parker and Huntington have only played a handful
of games and it was a very new look team so to expect everything to be 100%
right is expecting too much.
For my money we were comfortable winners and never really looked in danger of
dropping points (Ok they hit the bar and forced a couple of saves from Casper
but were not a real threat all night).
My main criticism was the fact that, possibly due to the appalling weather,
we shot from distance on by far too many occasions, occasions where had the
ball gone in it would literally have been one in a lifetime - I can particular
remember a left foot volley from Prutton from way outside the area, sorry
Prutts they don't even go in in training !! Coupled to that the fact that so
much of the long range shots were poor (Sweeny, Flo and Parker all missing by
miles) gives the reason why we did not win by more - well that and a definate
penalty not being given!
Overall a good solid away performance and a clean sheet and a lot of hope for
the rest of the season.
A few final points - Flo. A lot on here seem to be critical of his
performance and up to a point I can see why, however for me he was a good link
between the midfield and Becks and kept the ball well for the most point and
while off the pace at times at other times did show glimpses of class. I would
certainly keep him in for Saturday.
Hughes - was nice to hear us singing his name, he has been a bit of an
underrated hero - he gives 100% whatever position he ends up in (he was right
wing for last 20 yesterday) and takes repsonsibility, a good captain. This was
epitomised in the 92nd minute when he played an awful ball down the line which
went straight into touch - his cry of "F*CK" could be heard all round the
ground, no attempt to blame the wind or to point \ shout at another player as
if they were in the wrong place as others may do, just a total acceptance that
he had got it wrong.
It was great to see them all laughing, joking and engaging in horseplay at
the post match hudddle - they look like players having a great time with a real
team spirit - well done Den, and as for Becks interview - how inarticulate is
he ? "what colour shirt am I wearing bruv ? " great stuff.
Bring on Saturday - it can't come quickly enough for me !!
Dave
