Until the turn of the century and all the mayhem that has surrounded Leeds United as a result of the sheer idiocy, incompetence and greed of a few individuals (are you listening Murdoch you bastard?) I always had three key dates embedded in my mind in terms of my worst Leeds United moments.
The first was actually my first ever match which was on the 10th of September 1960 when we lost to Huddersfield 1-4. I was six years old and I went with other kids from my class at school as we got free tickets for some reason due to us playing in a school football team (imagine that twat Bates doing that now - er why should I give the state anything? as he trundles off cap in hand to the council begging for subvention in his ever present mendicant manner. I digress. I remember it being a miserable day and I wondered what the fuss was all about. A week later I saw a 4-4 draw against the Middlesbrough scum and was hooked. Life in the sixties was a dream, I revelled in the sheer delight of it all and although we had our ups and downs the rollercoaster didn't reallly stop until the 17th of April 1971. I will never forget the anger I felt about Ray Tinkler and subsequently Jeff Astle. Especially when he trundled about on telly in the 90s. Tosser! The 5th of May 1973 is also embedded in my mind. I have never ever forgiven Bob Stokoe for even daring to turn up at Wembley. I'm glad he lost the plot and couldn't remember Wembley. My mothers family come from Sunderland and they made such a bloody meal out of that match. It never occured to them that they were visitors in leeds (where they had all moved) and were more than happy to enjoy the hospitality we extended to them (the usual you know living in shit rented houses in Woodhouse, doing crap menial jobs down the pit). Mackems my arse. Late spring in 1975 set the seal for me, yes the 28th of May 1975. Cheated by a European conspiracy which still reigns in football today. Bitter and Twisted me? You fucking bet I am.
